Small Stones Worlds Apart is the most comprehensive book featuring small-sized viewing stones ever produced in the English language. The 272-page generously illustrated book features 439 stones or stone displays. This electronic book is the product of an online Small Stone Contest sponsored by VSANA (Viewing Stone Association of North America) from October 1 through December 2020. The enthusiastic response of 573 submissions from 127 stones collectors from 24 countries reflects the global popularity and appeal of small stones collected and appreciated for their aesthetic qualities. Each stone or display was assigned to one of four categories: traditional stones, contemporary stones, traditional stone displays, and contemporary stone displays.

Artist and sculptor Andy Moerlein served as the judge for this contest. The best 10% of the entries in each category received an “Outstanding Award,” and a second 10% received an “Excellent Award.” The award-winning stones are featured at the beginning of each category. They serve to inform others about the growing appeal found in the beauty of diminutive rocks.

Stone appreciation is an ancient Asian tradition that reached its peak in China and spread to other countries. Stones are selected for their unusual shapes, texture and patterns, color, and mineral composition. Prized stones were highly valued by scholars, artists, and even royalty. They inspired poets, painters, and writers over the millenniums. Even today, collectors pay high prices for an exceptional stone.

Large unusual stones are often displayed in gardens and courtyards, while medium-size rocks are displayed indoors on trays or wooded stands. Small rocks are better suited for display in more intimate places. Smaller-sized stones have been largely overlooked in exhibitions and in books and articles about viewing stone appreciation. This volume will help to develop an awareness of the beauty and appeal of smaller stones.
