Viewing stone appreciation is inspired by natural geological features, biological entities—people, animals, plants—and less so by artifacts—boats, huts, bridges. In this new section, we will be featuring unusual geological and biological elements that can or have influenced the collection of an unusual rock to view for its aesthetic qualities. We want you to look to nature for guidance to the types of rocks to add to your collection.
Natural stones resembling various styles of small boats have long inspired stone collectors. The most frequently observed stones suggest simple hand-powered crafts like canoes, dinghies, and similar boats used on lakes and coastal bays.
Weestern Sumatra in Indonesia
This stone is from western Sumatra in Indonesia, and was purchased at an Asia-Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention in Bali in 2007. It is 26 cm wide, 14 cm high, and 12.5 cm deep in this configuration.
