Hidden Wonder

While malachite was collected an admired for it beautiful color and patterns in China for over 1,000 years, the display of this mineral in this base transform this into a contemporary display. Both the stone and base are products of Guangdong province in southeastern China. The base was carved with in the last ten years and is typical of southern style bases with extensive relief carving reflecting aspects of nature. The additional of the carved tree standing above the stone on the upper right departs from traditional base making practices and is a contemporary element. The presence of trees suggests a natural woodland scene where deposits of malachite are found along with copper ores in southwestern Guangdong province. It is the style of the base that makes this a contemporary viewing stone.
