High as mountains and long as rivers

This Nine Dragon River (Jiulong Bi) stone from Fujian province in China is reminiscent of the many sharply vertical karst limestone formations found throughout southern China. In a departure from traditional methods of display, Shanghai artist Chen Shihong created a landscape setting that combines the features of a wood base and a display table. The intricate carving around the base of this stone recreates a landscape scene that one may find in a karst setting.

The wood base is 40 x 20 cm and is made of rosewood and was created in 2019. The hard stone is 19 cm wide, 36 cm high, and 14.5 cm deep. Nine Dragon River stones have been collected and displayed for their aesthetic qualities since the Ming dynasty. This stone display is in the collection of Thomas S. Elias and Hiromi Nakaoji.
