"Inspiration"

This combination is one of a series of displays by Tom Elias featuring a stone and a book. It reinforces the long-standing relationship between literature inspired by viewing stones. The most significant examples of this are found in Chinese poems and prose where scholars wrote effusively about the features of certain irregular-shaped stones. This carbonate stone is 18 cm wide, 27 cm high, and 9 cm deep and the surface pattern helps identify it as a wen stone. It is in the collection of Tom Elias and Hiromi Nakaoji.
