Stone of the Month:
June 2017
"Faithful Companion"

The idea that all stones must represent a landscape or have a serious interpretation is a mistaken notion. There is a lighter side to stone appreciation that is sometimes overlooked by stone collectors. This stone could represent a playful puppy, tailing wagging back and forth, happy to see his friend returning home from school or work. Amusement or comedy is one function of art.

This is an Ligurian Palombino stone from Italy. It was collected by the late Angelo Attina, one of the great collectors of these stones. The stone itself is 18.5 cm (7.3 inches) wide, 14 cm (5.5 inches) high, 13.5 cm (5.3 inches) deep. The orientation of the stone on this base helps convey the impression of a figure.
