Stone of the Month:
December 2017
"Heaven's Gate"

The large natural hole in this vertically-oriented Chinese Lingbi stone is unusual for this stone type. That the stone can be rotated and viewed from different angles adds to its interest. This Lingbi stone has the four attributes for excellent stones that were developed by Shu Shi over 900 years ago— shou (thinness), lou (channels), tou (holes), and zhou (wrinkles). Some stone enthusiasts will view this as a scenic landscape stone with a narrow archway; while students of ancient Chinese literature may link it to a poem or ancient classic literature or a natural feature such as heaven's gate in Hunan province or in the Shilin Stone Forest in Yunnan province. The stone without the base is 13.5 cm (5 inches) wide, 30 cm (12 inches) high, and 8 cm (3 inches) deep. A small carved wooden figure added for seasonal interest stands in amazement of this stone.
