Stone of the Month:

May 2021

"Klamath Forest"

by Janet Roth

I found this stone at Black Butte Lake on one of our early trips together with Mas Nakajima. I was sitting down on the rocks and looking at the stones around me and saw this one. It was simply sitting upright on the surface next to me as if waiting to be found. I called Mas over to look, and he went very quiet. Finally, he said, “I’ve been looking my entire life for this stone.” His love for the stone shows in the daiza, which he carved to firmly and gently cradle it while ensuring its best qualities were revealed. This stone does not have big flashy features demanding one’s attention, but this beautiful, quiet suiseki constantly reveals new depths to me over the years. As Mas would say, “you never get tired.” This stone is 30.5 x 12.7 x 13.3 cm (12 x 5 x 5.25 inches). Photo: Sam Edge
