Stone of the Month:

December 2021

"Infinite Horizons"

by Santo Burrato, Italy

I collected this stone in the Orobie Alps in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy where I Iive. I found so much beauty in this stone. It vaguely resembles a hut stone (Yagata-ishii) and a stone with a gallery (Domon-ishi). But this stone evokes in my mind a refuge stone (Yadori-amayadori) that welcomes the old wayfarer at the end of a life’s journey. It is a good shelter and a welcome stop before crossing the passage that leads to the infinite horizons of a new life. The tunnel in the stone is the passageway from this life.

I made the daiza from walnut wood with a more robust right side to obtain the correct inclination for this display. This stone measures 9.5 x 13.5 x 9 cm.
