Stone of the Month:

June 2021

Untitled

This is my favorite South African figure stone. It was found near Blombos in the Southern Cape and is 45 cm high. It is a world-famous archeological site where some of the first evidence of symbolism, cognitive thinking and technological advancement, traits used to define modern human behavior, was found. This site was occupied during the Middle Stone Age between 100,000 and 70,000 years ago. It is mounted on a grey slate found in the same area. I love the way the rock looks at me. This viewing stone will be featured in an exhibit of more than 100 rocks at an exhibit at the beautiful winery Babylonstoren near Stellenbosch, South Africa in June 2021. Photo: Rebecca Pretorius
