“Patterns”
Stones with surface patterns or those from deep within have appeal because of the messages they convey. Patterns that suggest flowers, figures, flying birds, or other easily identifiable objects are quickly associated with experiences or events in our lives. Other types of pattern stones can be more challenging because they require us to consider the image we see. These types of stones have caused scholars, long past and present, to contemplate what the patterns mean to us. The same pattern can result in totally different reactions to different people, depending upon their life experiences.
This small, semi-flattened river cobble from the Philippines was a gift. What type of base would be suitable for displaying this stone that would reinforce the upward curving dark lines on the stone? Zebrawood, a tropical hardwood with dark brown stripes, was selected, and together, forms a symmetrical display that stirs the imagination. Take time to look at this stone display before arriving at any decision. Does it represent layers in your life as you age, layers of geological time, a pine cone, or just a rock? Would you keep this on your desk as a scholar’s rock or occasional reflection?
