Stone of the Month:

April 2026

Surging”

The form of this stone suggests movement or energy as it progresses on its journey. Where it has been and where it is going remain a mystery. In this orientation, it can suggest many options, including a boat or a canoe with the paddler hunched over as it surges forward. If this rock is rotated 180 degrees, it resembles a large thatched hut, as seen in tropical Asia. As a result, two carved wood bases were made for this river stone from western Sumatra, Indonesia. This stone was acquired in 2007 while attending an Asia Pacific Bonsai convention in Bali. It is 25 cm wide, 15 cm high, and 12 cm deep. It is in the collection of Thomas S. Elias and Hiromi Nakaoji.
